Using Coloring Schemes

As part of our effort to provide new methods for learning music, dynamic Coloring Schemes can be used in many widgets.

These colorings can be set from the Colors tab in the Widget’s Settings:

Coloring Schemes

  • Single Color: unique, static color
  • Color by Note Name: colors by note name, regardless of key.
  • Color by Diatonic Degree: changes color based on the scale degree. Use the Key Selector to change keys.
  • Color by Chromatic Degree: changes color based on the scale degree, using separate colors for chromatic alterations.
  • Color by Harmonic Function: changes color based on the function of a chord (Tonic, Subdominant, Dominant and Applied [Secondary] Dominants)
  • Color by Dynamics (velocity): changes colors based on MIDI Velocity.
  • Split Hands (RH/LH): split colors for left and right hands. Exclusive to the Piano Widget.

Decay Simulation

When coloring by dynamics (velocity), you can use the Simulate Sound Decay option to enable a piano-like decay simulation for dynamics.
