Function Symbol Widget

The Function Symbol widget display the function of the currently played chord (in relation to the current tonality) and offers extensive customization options. Functions are modelled according to Hugo Riemann’s funktiontherie principles, especially those found in modern German textbooks.

Settings

Function Style

Select a function symbol convention from the available presets:

  • T, Sp, Tg, D7: modern german functional theory.
  • T, Sr, Ta, D7: brazilian functional theory (Koelreutter and disciples).
  • T, S, T, D: simplified (only primary) functions.
  • T, S<, T, D: Hugo’s Riemann original funktiontherie (not available yet).

Show Key

Displays the key followed by a colon before the roman numeral (e.g, C: V7).

Show Secondary Dominants Targets

By default, secondary dominants chords will be labelled as (D7). When enabled, the symbol will also show the target resolution - i.e. (D7)[Tp].

Show Alternate Symbols

Show alternate function symbols on chords with multiple meanings.

Font

Choose a font for displaying function symbols.

Shortcuts

Common shortcuts (shared across all widgets)
  • Ctrl + C: Clones the widget, creating a new instance with the same settings.
  • Ctrl + Left Click: Opens the contextual menu for front/back ordering, background transparency, and widget linking options.
